Pennsylvania Threshing Floor Table The wood used on the Table top came from a Barn built in the 1840’s in Pennsylvania. The Wood type is Hemlock Pine. The original size of the boards were 15 feet long, 20 inches wide and 2” thick and as straight as could be. The purpose of these boards was they were used to be a Threshing Floor. The Threshing floor was the 2nd floor in the Barn. Threshing is the process of removing corn and wheat from the stem of the plant. The threshing barn was also invented by President George Washington in 1797. These Boards also have a unique “divot” in them and is believed to be caused from cattle when it was a tree. On the edge of the boards is a few spots of the original barn paint as well. Its crazy to think this wood served its purpose in a Barn in the 1840’s (over 150 years ago) and now has a totally new purpose as a beautiful dining Table.
Pennsylvania threshing floor Kitchen Island At the end of the pictures is the barn the countertop wood came from. It was a mill in Pennsylvania over 100 years old. The wood was the sub floor and the “waves” in the wood is caused from the wagons that were pulled on top of them years ago. The boards were true hemlock pine 2×12 with original tongue & groove. One of the original “groove boards” is intact on the front edge. The countertop features 8 boards with 2 layers of 4 boards. It also has 4 original square pegs in the top. There are 6 legs to support the weight of the top, 5 legs came from a mill in North Texas. The 6th leg came from the same barn in Pennsylvania as the tops. The average size is 6”x6” for the legs The frames and trim are made out of true 2”x4” wood I got here in Smithville. It was actually the first real 2×4 I have ever seen which was really cool.
Barnwood Vanity This Vanity was ordered from a local bathroom restoration business man. The owner of the house is one of the largest hay producers in the country. During the bathroom remodel he tore down the sheet rock and found that there was an original tongue and groove wall behind the sheetrock that was falling about and no longer needed to support the walls. So I was asked to make a wheelchair accessible vanity for this customer out of this 100 year old wood from the original walls in his home. The door handles and drawer pulls are pieces of the original tongue on the wood. The paint on some boards is the original paint as well. The drawer boxes are 3/4” maple with soft closing drawer slides and hinges. The customer will install a custom cut marble countertop with single sink.
